Opening up a kan of Rat Ogres

More progress on the Cryx. I filled in the few odd gaps in the miniatures, and then based them all. After that I left them to dry for about six hours. It was warm enough today that they dried pretty fast. Then I gave them a basecoat of black, which is currently drying.

While the Cryx were in their initial drying phase I started on the Rat Ogres. Rather than work on all three at once, I am going to do them all individually. So to start, I clipped one of the sets of legs out and cleaned them up. Each leg has four parts, a foot, a lower leg with a ball joint that goes into the foot, and two sides of the upper leg that fit over the lover leg. The fifth piece in the photo is the side on the Kan model. The indented circle on the right is what the arm attaches too, while the raised circle is what the leg attaches too.

Unfortunately the standard Killa Kan body is way too wide to fit onto a monster base. Instead I will be making a much thinner body for the Rat Ogre. This was always in the cards, especially since I want the Skaven driving it to be visible on it somehow.

Luckily the power source is just the right width, and fits perfectly at the back of the two sides.

With the power source on, I cut a piece of plasticard to fit the front. At the moment I am still tossing up ideas on how to attach the driver. Once I know how he is being included, I can detail the rest of the Rat Ogre.

Next come the arms. So that the Rat Ogres looks as little like a Killa Kan as possible the arms will be stuck on so that they stand up. Basically, the same way they are oriented in the picture, but attached to each side of the model.

Rather than attach any of the saws or guns on the Killa Kan sprue I am going to give the Rat Ogre two giant magnets. Kind of like what you see in Hollywood movies, attached to cranes, and used to pick cars up in scrapyards. To build these I am using two 40k bases filled with Milliput. This is just the initial layer. When this has dried I’ll add another, and smooth it out to make it look like a flat surface as best I can.

And that is it so far. I’m really excited about how this Rat Ogre is turning out.

  1. Looks pretty cool. So are these going to look kind of like the walker/loader from Aliens with a rat inside driving it? I was hoping for some kind of half rat ogre/half mech monstrosity!

  2. Yeah, more Alien loader suit than Robocop Rat Ogre. I’m keen to have my army themed away from the Moulder monster-esque end of things and way more towards the Skryre insane machines angle.
